Private Health Insurance by State

Health insurance is regulated state by state, so the honest answer to "what can I buy?" changes the moment you cross a state line. A carrier filed in Texas may not be filed in Pennsylvania, and a plan that is the obvious answer in Georgia may not exist in Washington.

Every page below is built from our own product availability map: which carriers can actually be written in that state, what published rates apply, and what is not available there.

How much availability varies

The complete Medical Mutual Protect suite is filed in 23 states. Bright Life is available in 41 of the states and jurisdictions we cover. LifeX is filed in 43 states and DC. Manhattan Life Affordable Choice is filed in 40. Guaranteed-issue coverage through Enrollment First reaches all 50 states plus DC, with a few product-level exceptions.

That means the same household can have five real choices in one state and two in another. Neither situation is a problem as long as somebody tells you the truth about it up front.

Common questions

Why does availability change by state?

Insurance is regulated at state level. Each carrier files its products state by state and chooses where to do business, so the shelf genuinely differs.

What if my state has fewer options?

It usually still has real ones, including guaranteed-issue coverage that nobody is declined for. The state page tells you exactly what is there.

What if I move states?

Private plans are written in the state where you live. If you move, tell your agent — the plan may need to be rewritten in the new state.

Can I buy coverage in a state I do not live in?

No. The application is written in your state of residence.
