Private health plans available in Alaska
These are the plans currently filed and available to an AO American Benefits agent in Alaska. Which one fits you depends on your health history, your household and what you want the plan to do.
| Plan | What it is |
|---|---|
| Manhattan Life Affordable Choice | An underwritten plan often paired with a catastrophic layer, and frequently the answer for larger households and for tobacco users. |
Availability is confirmed at the time of application and can change as carriers file or withdraw products.
What private health insurance costs in Alaska
None of the plans that publish rates are available in Alaska, so premiums here are quoted individually rather than read off a table. What drives the number is the same everywhere: your age, your household, tobacco use and your health history.
Our cost page explains how private health pricing works and shows published rates from the states where those plans are available, which is a reasonable reference point even where they are not filed.
What is not available in Alaska
We would rather tell you now than after you have filled something in. In Alaska, Bright Life is not available here; LifeX is not filed here; Medical Mutual Protect is not filed here; the Pre-Med Defender GAP plan is not available here; the SelectMed Bronze Pro guaranteed-issue plan is not available here.
That is normal. Insurance is regulated state by state, and every carrier chooses which states to file in. It is also the reason a national quote engine that ignores your state will show you plans you cannot actually buy.
Doctors and networks in Alaska
Most of the plans available in Alaska run on national PPO networks, which is why people can usually keep the doctors they already have. The networks our plans use are: PHCS PPO, PHCS Extended, MultiPlan PHCS, First Health PPO, Aetna PPO, Aetna Open Choice PPO, Cigna PPO, Blue Cross Blue Shield (BlueCard).
Networks are the part people get wrong most often. Before you apply, check your own doctors and the hospital you would want to use against the specific network on the specific plan — not just the carrier name. An agent will do this with you.
When you can apply in Alaska
Private medically underwritten coverage does not use the annual open enrollment window that exchange plans use. You can apply in any month of the year, subject to underwriting, and coverage typically starts on the first of a following month.
That matters if you have just left a job, lost group coverage, moved to Alaska, or started working for yourself in the middle of the year.
Is private coverage the right answer in Alaska?
Sometimes it is not, and we will say so. If your household qualifies for a large premium tax credit or a cost-sharing reduction on the exchange, that subsidy is very hard to beat and an exchange plan is likely your better deal.
Private coverage tends to make sense for Alaska households that earn too much for meaningful subsidy help, are reasonably healthy, want a national PPO rather than a narrow local network, or need coverage to start outside open enrollment.
A licensed agent verifies eligibility and writes the application either way. You never enroll yourself online.
