About the AO Private Health Marketplace

The AO Private Health Marketplace is the private health shopping and education platform of AO American Benefits, an independent insurance agency. This page explains exactly who we are, how the marketplace works, and how we get paid.

We would rather you know that before you shop than after. Nothing on this site is gated: you can read every page and use the marketplace without giving a name, phone number or email.

What the AO Private Health Marketplace is

The marketplace is a research and shopping tool, not a lead form wearing a costume. It shows you which private health products can fit a household like yours, what each one actually is, which networks they use, and — where the carrier publishes rates — what they cost.

Private health insurance is an umbrella term covering different product types: medically underwritten major medical style plans, fixed indemnity, ERISA and association coverage, short-term medical and supplemental products. They are not the same thing and they are not all ACA-compliant major medical. Our job is to make that difference obvious before you buy anything, which is why the site explains what private health insurance is and how it works at length.

The philosophy: value first, contact last

Most private health websites hide the information behind a form so an agent can call you. We built this one the other way around: give you the information, let you shop, and let you decide whether you want to talk to anyone at all.

That means you can spend an hour on this site, run the marketplace, read the carrier brochures on the resources page, and leave without us ever knowing who you are. When you do raise your hand, a licensed agent picks up from where you left off.

How the process works, start to finish

Six steps, in this order. You control the point at which a human enters the picture.

  1. Tell us about yourself. Household basics and health history — the things underwriting actually depends on. We never ask about your income, MAGI or subsidy amount.
  2. Explore relevant options. The marketplace narrows the field to products that can work for your household in your state.
  3. Learn about the plans and networks. What each plan is, what it is not, which PPO or EPO network it uses, and where to read the carrier's own brochure.
  4. Decide whether you want help. This is the step other sites skip. If you are not ready, you close the tab.
  5. Connect with a licensed agent. Apply for a plan or book a benefit consultation, whichever suits you.
  6. The agent verifies eligibility and completes enrollment. Availability, benefits, limitations, exclusions and rates vary by state and are confirmed at application.

How we are paid

When a policy is placed, the insurance carrier pays the agency a commission. That is our only compensation for the coverage we place. It costs you nothing extra — a carrier's rate is the carrier's rate, whether you buy through an agent or not.

You do not pay AO American Benefits a fee to shop, to get a quote or to speak with an agent. There is no charge for using this site.

Because we are independent and represent many carriers, we are not tied to placing any one company's product. Which plan fits still depends on your health, your household, your state and what is available there.

What we do not do

Two commitments that shape how the site is built:

  • We do not sell consumer data to lead buyers. Your information is not a product.
  • We do not require contact information to browse. No name, phone number or email to read a page, compare plans or see published rates.
  • We do not ask about income, MAGI or subsidy amounts anywhere on this site.
  • We do not let you enroll yourself online. A licensed agent writes every application, so someone accountable has checked that the plan matches what you were told.

Where we are honest about our limits

We do not place every product in every state. Carrier availability differs — for example, Bright Life is available in most states but not in AK, HI, MD, MN, NH, OR, VT, WA or DE, and LifeX is available in 43 states plus DC but not in AK, HI, MD, MN, NH, OR, VT or WA. The marketplace will tell you when a product is not offered where you live rather than pretend otherwise.

Underwritten plans ask health questions, and the honest answer is that they can decline an applicant or exclude a condition. Guaranteed-issue options exist but are limited in what they do. We explain that on the pre-existing conditions page.

And private coverage is not always the right answer. A household that qualifies for a large premium subsidy or a cost-sharing reduction is usually better off on the ACA exchange, and we will say so rather than sell around it. Private coverage tends to win for people who get little or no subsidy. The trade-offs are laid out on private health vs the ACA marketplace.

Getting in touch

If you want to speak with a licensed agent, call 256-743-5362 or use the marketplace to book a benefit consultation. If you would rather keep reading first, start with the private health insurance guide.

What is the relationship with USA Benefits Group?

USA Benefits Group is the established national organization behind AO American Benefits and has served consumers since 1988. Our agents are licensed USA Benefits Group agents with AO American Benefits.

AO American Benefits and this marketplace are newer than 1988; that history belongs to USA Benefits Group.

Do I have to give my phone number to use the marketplace?

No. You can research, compare and shop without giving a name, phone number or email. You speak with a licensed agent only if you choose to.

Is the AO Private Health Marketplace the same as HealthCare.gov?

No. HealthCare.gov is the government ACA exchange, where premium tax credits are available. This marketplace shows private health products — including medically underwritten plans, fixed indemnity and supplemental coverage — which are not ACA plans and do not carry subsidies.

If you qualify for a large subsidy, the exchange is usually the better financial choice.

What does it cost to work with an agent here?

Nothing. Carriers pay the agency a commission on policies placed, and that costs you nothing extra. There is no fee to shop, to get a quote or to talk with an agent.

Can you write a plan in my state?

Sometimes, and sometimes not — availability differs by carrier and product. The marketplace filters to what is actually offered where you live, and eligibility is confirmed at application.

Reviewed and updated August 2026. Availability, benefits and premiums vary by state and are confirmed at application.
